The driving factor of high-performance
DISC for Sport
Performing at your best in sport, whether as an athlete, coach, consultant, or administrator often relies on you perfecting the necessary skills at the highest level. Whilst the competitive sports industry often prioritises physicality, nutrition, and strategy as a means of achieving high-performance, the most effective factor of sporting success, and the biggest asset a team or group possesses is neglected: the people side.
DISC is the key to unlocking your strengths and building on your limitations, whilst learning to better understanding others so you can collaborate more effectively, maximise relationships, and ultimately drive results. It is the DISC model, along with the internationally recognised and respected work of Dr Tony Alessandra, that served as a foundation for the development of Athlete Assessments’ suite of DISC Profiles, which are tailored specifically for sport.

The development of DISC Profiling in sport
Where it All began
Athlete Assessments was founded by Bo Hanson, four-time Australian Olympian and three-time Olympic bronze medal winner in 2007. At the time of Bo’s career as a rowing athlete, DISC Profiling was only tailored to the business world. While Bo found the behavioural theory of DISC useful, he noted its design was not applicable to the demand of the sporting industry. Through collaboration with a team of experts including coaches, IT developers, and other DISC accredited professprionals, Bo established the AthleteDISC Profile in the same year as Athlete Assessments. Following this, the CoachDISC Profile was released in early 2009 specifically for coaches and trainers, and the Sports ManagerDISC Profile in 2011, which became the latest professional development tool in sports administration and management.
Since the launch of these tailored DISC Profiles, Athlete Assessments has continued to innovate and diversify their range of services and products provided, making them available in alternative languages such as Japanese and Hungarian.

The driving factor of high-performance
In with the new
The latest insights into sporting performance have overturned the long-held view of how success in sport is achieved. In November 2015, Research presented at the World Class Performance Conference in London explored what differentiates a superelite (defined as a high-performance athlete who was expected to do well and went on to win multiple medals) from an Olympic competitor who goes home empty-handed. Whilst surprising to some, research findings concluded that the determining factor was the quality of the coach-athlete relationship.
Moreover, further research conducted as part of the Canadian Olympic Study, ‘Own the Podium,’ reflected the same results. Conclusively, the top two factors that contributed to an Olympic athlete winning a medal or producing a personal best performance, were the athlete’s self-awareness and the quality of the coach-athlete relationship. As Mike Krzyzewski, legendary basketball coach once said:
A common mistake among those who work in sport is spending a disproportional amount of time on “x’s and o’s” as compared to time spent learning about people.
